The origin of the art of macrame

Macrame is one of the many crafts that are revived by those who love to work with their hands.

Macrame art is actually an interesting art, dating back thousands of years. Some believe that the term comes from the 13th-century Arabic word migramah, which means "margin". Others believe its origins lie in the Turkish word macrame, which stands for "handkerchief" or "towel", and was a method of securing pieces of fabric by using excess threads along the top or bottom of woven fabrics.

Decorative macrame first appeared in sculptures by the Babylonians and Assyrians depicting fringed braiding used to decorate costumes. In the thirteenth century, Arab weavers used a decorative knot to finish excess thread on shawls, veils, and towels. Then it spread to Europe via North Africa.

Macrame is described by some as a craze from the 1970s when the craft reached the height of popularity in Victorian England. Most Victorian homes had some form of macramé, which was used not only to decorate clothing, but also as curtains, tablecloths, and bedspreads.
